How to Stay Cool in the Midsummer Heat

 

The summer is in full swing here in New Jersey, which means oppressive humidity, strong rays from the sun, afternoon storms and sweltering heat. August is right around the corner, putting us squarely in the middle of the dog days of summer. Today, the Hunter's Heroes Foundation offers up some important tips for staying cool in the midsummer heat so you can avoid the dreaded heat exhaustion.

 

Avoid Peak Sun

 

Try your best to avoid going outside during the peak sun hours of the day. When the humidity is high and the sun is at its strongest you should remain indoors, or at least covered by shade, in an effort to fight off heat exhaustion. Try going outside early in the morning or later in the afternoon or evening hours to enjoy a picnic, a bike ride, a run or a swim.

 

Stay Hydrated

 

If you must be outside during the peak sunshine hours you need to stay hydrated. In fact, you need to stay hydrated at all times of the day in the summer. Drink plenty of water and drinks with electrolytes so you do not become dehydrated. Should you feel lightheaded or dizzy it's best to get indoors where there is air conditioning and lay down for a bit.

 

Choose Appropriate Clothing

 

You need to choose the appropriate clothing for the oppressive heat. Make sure you wear shorts, short-sleeve shirts, a hat and that your clothing is loose-fitting. A hat should always be worn when you are outside. It helps keep the sun off your face, which can prevent sunburn.

 

Take Breaks

 

If you are doing yard work in this heat, or have to work outside for your job, make sure you take breaks. Employers are required to provide breaks for their employees. Do not try to play the hero and work through these breaks. When on your break, go indoors to an air conditioned room, drink plenty of water, eat something light and relax.

 

Know Your Limits

 

Make sure you know your limits when dealing with the heat. If it is too hot out to go for a walk or cut the lawn, don't do it. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. Knowing your limits is vital to staying healthy and out of the hospital when the heat becomes oppressive. 

 

Protect Your Pets

 

Pets are not immune to heat exhaustion. Protect them from the sun as much as possible. If it is too hot for you to go for a walk, don't take the dog for a long walk either. Simply bring them outside to do their business and then right back indoors to have a drink.
