New Year's Eve Safety Tips

2018 is right around the corner, which means that folks will be headed out to celebrate and ring in the New Year tonight all over the area. You've likely planned an incredible night with family and friends, but have you done everything necessary to stay safe wherever you go tonight? Here are some New Year's Eve safety tips for you to follow when you are out ringing in the New Year tonight in the Delaware Valley.

Designate a Driver

Always designate a driver. There are plenty of options available including family, friends, taxis, public transportation and ride-sharing services. There's no reason whatsoever for you to get behind the wheel after drinking tonight or any other night. Buzzed driving is drunk driving.

Stay Hydrated

If you plan on drinking tonight, and drinking often, be sure to stay hydrated. Mix in some water after every couple of alcoholic beverages to keep your body hydrated. Alcohol is a natural diuretic, which means too much of will make you want to use the restroom often. Mixing water into your liquid intake is a good idea, especially tonight.

Be Sure to Eat

It's always best to eat prior to drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea. You should also snack while you drink. The more food you keep in your system while drinking the better off you will be as you partake in adult beverages.

Avoid Fireworks

As cool as they are, you should avoid fireworks at all costs tonight, especially if you've been drinking. Fireworks are illegal in the state of New Jersey, which is reason number one to avoid them. The second reason is that fireworks and alcohol do not mix well at all.

Have a Plan

Make sure you have a plan in place if going out in a large crowd with friends and family should you get separated. If your kids are old enough to drive make sure you set a reasonable curfew for them to be home. Worrying about them driving on a regular night is stressful. Add in that tonight is a big drinking night and your worries will surely be overwhelming.

Don't Leave Your Car

If you can, schedule a ride-share to and from your activities. New Year's Day is the second highest day for vehicle thefts. Cars are left overnight and oftentimes unlocked. If you must leave your car overnight be sure to lock the doors and do not leave any valuables in the car.
